Brahmacharya etymologically means “Moving towards god”. It directly means the control of sexual activity. But it means much more than that. Lets see why we need to practice it.
Animals find pleasure in the senses, Man finds pleasure in the intellect, God finds pleasure in spiritual contemplation. – Swami Vivekananda.
True civilization is a man making civilization. It brings men out of animals. So, first we need to become men. Real men – men, who are not timid slaves to sense pleasures, men who are free, men who are bold and strong. But unfortunately, the ‘real’ men who we see in movies are nothing but coward, weak slaves of sex, alcohol, etc. Those are our heroes! They’d better be heroes among lower animals – for they are not worth anything better. We want heroes like Vivekananda, Shankara or Shivananda.
Who does not want a strong body, sharp intellect and the like ? All men want it. But how many get it ? Only a few men who do not dissipate their energy in fruitless activities, men who are bold enough to resist temptation. Brother, it takes superhuman strength to resist temptation! It takes only a weak and a timid man to fall prey to temptations.
And what will brahmacharya give us ? What not! It is the penance of penances. Who can describe the glory of a perfect brahmachari! His body will glows like the sun! His voice will sound like the ring of a bell. His body will be strong. His presence will energise people around him! Just imagine all this. Don’t we want to be like that ?
Look at Swami Vivekananda who was brahmacharya personified, what a magnificient character! He had a perfect memory. He used to remember every single thing he read or saw once. Now tell me, which is higher ? Being the best of men, by conquering sense pleasures ? or being the lowest animal who cant resist temptation ? Look how a lion gets trapped, when it gets attracted to the lioness placed the cage! Aren’t you still convinced that yielding to sense pleasures is the royal gateway to hell ? Do you still want to pursue that path ?
I want to practice lifelong brahmacharya. They say I can conquer diseases, become a mystic, keep my body for hundreds of years, have adamantine hard body, get metaphysical powers, etc etc. i want to see it its really possible. This is an experiment. I shall see for myself what the great sages of yore have told us.
Follow this blog to follow my journey. I’m determined to post every day my thoughts, actions I take towards brahmacharya, etc. Please do post comments. Come brothers, lets be real men! Lets break the shackles and be free!

Best wishes for your noble venture, my friend. May the way become progressively easy for you.
In the concept of chakras, if you could raise your energy fields (by the help of brahmacharya, mdeitation, pranayama etc.) beyond Anahata Chakra, you will never fall back to sensual pleasures. The term brahmacharya, as per my understading, means walking with God.

Hi Balajirao,
I am so happy to see that even in the present world few people are there who quest for such a thing. If you are practicing bharmacharya through meditation andall please tell me how much you have progressed in it.Ramakrishna use to say that you will see light, god forms but is it really like that or just a hellucination.I am also feeling thirsty to taste this divine wine. Please tell me if you meet any person who like Ramakrishna can speak to god and can show to others as well.

can long term practice of bramacharya cause any psycological problems
April 13, 2009 at 9:26 pm
I am struggling to observe Brahmacharya, but this time I am determined. I am devotee of sriramakrishna and I am happy that there are atleast few people in this material world trying to do what best can be done to progress towards realising God.
I have already taken risk of loosing semen in persuit of pleasure, but this time I have decided to try my best to be pure in mind and body come what may be ofcourse with his grace. I do not expect great powers from Brahmacharya, but alteast I shall begin this noble journey thats the best offering I can make to the God.
Eager to hear from others who have made good progress.

I too am proud to join this list of people in the present times; who give importance to the things that are actually important. I am a devotee of HH Sri Sri Ravi Shankar; and have been trying since Apr 2002 to practice brahmacharya; but am repeatedly failing at it; though with a larger time gap… Jai Gurudev.

I agree all things Which has been Described above.
But My Suggestion as a Younger Brother is That there Should also be Links to the Online Books Of Swami Vivekananda Or Asaram Bapu’s “Yuvadhan
Suraksha” So that With this Youngsters Can Read That Books also.
Following is Link to Asaram Bapu’s Yuvadhan Suraksha:

whats the use in becoming bramhachari ?? does peace, patience, stability come only by becoming bramhachari ? i believe your words only when you succeed can you ??? according to me bramhachari or a family person both are the same ??? a clean soul is what is needed not the corrupt mind or corrupt heart ??? if all were into it human evolution would have been extinct ??? there was no question of you or us being born ??? when a couple come to a bramhachari for his blessings wont he bless them with children of wealth or health ?? why does he do that when he himself doesnt believe in it ??? its all a false conception … if you can answer it convincingly i shall believe you ???

Brahmacharya means restraint – restraint in eating, restraint in everything. And one can be a perfect brahmachari when one is married, but remember dear friend, it’s not very easy – for, to achieve that the couple should be husband and wife only for the sake of progeny, which is very difficult for me, because it has a big risk of falling down, forgetting your true nature, getting lost in enjoyment and leads to corruption of body and mind. I see you’ve completely mis understood the idea. For instance even Lord Krishna, was a perfect brahmachari. He says in the Gita, “Samatvam Yoga ucchyate”. Restraint, balanced life is yoga, that is brahmacharya. Also the etymological meaning of brahmacharya is “brahmat charati” – moving, progressing towards god.
September 20, 2009 at 2:39 pm
One more thing Sudhanva – There are two types of questioners – one who wants to know the answer and the other who “knows” there’s no answer and is a rebel – so he ends up not understanding the answer, no matter how good it is! So I’m afraid your question is tainted with the second attitude!
I’ve found great peace and stability and spiritual progress, universal love through brahmacharya and if you think some other path will lead you to it, you are welcome! Please follow it. All be best!
September 20, 2009 at 12:23 pm
according to me .. my soul is GOD … i go according my soul when it says its right its is obviously right … we are here for ourselves and to uplift others not to become bramhachari …. i dont believe in god … i believe in mother nature and our next gods parents… god wont come when you find yourself in problems but yes nature ill never say no to you however you are it gives air water land and light without even thinking twice… its the heart of mother which can only do such things … i only believe in what i see … GOD I HAVE NEVER SEEN BUT NATURE IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN WITH ME …what or who is GOD according to you ?? why do you or what makes you believe him ?? is it because your ancestors put that in your mind ?? or do you have a valid reason with proof ??? why do you do charity (dana)or something for the religion ??? charity to help others of yourself ??? is it because you believe doin charity god helps you ?? you trying to bribe god ??? have you ever done or given anything to to a stranger without them asking you ??? the day you never hate a person or an animal or a non living thing and you give love without expecting in return you ill reach that state … i hope to get answers for my questions and ill be waiting…..
September 20, 2009 at 2:54 pm
First “my soul is GOD” and “I don’t believe GOD” seems contradictory! Ha ha god is not something to be believed, god is to be realised. There are as many rational explanations as to why god “exists” and why he does not “exist”, so by being rational you don’t get anywhere!
I don’t know the nature of god, one cannot “know” either. For, “knowing” is inferior, bound by the brain, bound by the mind. Adam fell when he “knew”! God is beyond “knowing” the scriptures say.
Frankly! Fortunately or unfortunately, I find no pleasure in the material things of this world, I’m sorry. So what am I got to do ? Reading through our religious/spiritual books, shows many men with similar feelings who have found a solution that gives them happiness infinitely long, infinitely high! So, why not I try the same thing ?
Since I don’t know what god is, I love the form of “Krishna” or “Narayana”. I intensely love him. It makes me forget everything, unties all attachments, gives me unmatched bliss and it never exhausts, rather multiplies more I love him. I may or may not be right. But who cares ? I find unmatched bliss and it’s ‘akshara’ (never decaying with time), nor boring nor does it desire anything. It’s love for love’s sake. So, find something like that and I can assure you that you’ll stop fighting with me from then, for your heart tells you “ye! this is the right path!”.
People around the world are mad of various things, women, money, fame etc and I’m mad for god! Soo simple! Who cares if it’s good or bad ? Afterall happiness is what all are after right ?
September 20, 2009 at 3:05 pm
Sorry I’ve not spoken of charity anywhere here and I won’t be commenting about it. You seemed to have a “volcano” of hate against our scriptures and it all erupted seeing this nonsense blog of mine, right ?
I can understand. I sincerely recomend that you ask this question to one who advertises charity, may be he’ll be able to help you. It’s out of scope of the blog
The other thing about god is, it is claimed that god is everywhere. This is very difficult to “know” or “understand”! Also the “Narayana Sooktam” and other hymns of the vedas say, “He has become the world! and this agrees with “everything is divine” statement. So when you find such a love which encompasses all living beings and you place them before yourself, you have found god!
I’m talking no new thing. It’s all in our scriptures. So, please, remove the idea that “hinduism is crap, foolish”, have a loving, open heart and study our scriptures and you’ll find what’s best for you, for it’s the mother of religions and has a path to bliss for everyone, right from a brute to a monk!
May you find god!
September 20, 2009 at 8:23 pm
HI Sudanva,
Here nobody is telling that you need to become a brahmachari to reliase God and nobody is asking you to belive in God. YOu find god in your parents, is also an highest virtue and if very high intensity exists, you are no less than a realised soul.
But please do not think Brahmacharya is useless, it is nothing but a committed discipline of mind and body in all aspects as told by Balajirao.
Yes God won’t come when in problems, but with sincere prayers you derive the strength to Face the problem..
Neither can you always depend on Nature, nature can both nurish and destroy makind like floods, earthequake etc. I was also reading some dooms day on Dec 12 , 2012.
GOD I HAVE NEVER SEEN BUT NATURE IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN WITH ME …what or who is GOD according to you ?? why do you or what makes you believe him ?? is it because your ancestors put that in your mind ?? or do you have a valid reason with proof ???- God cannot be explained, it can only be experienced. I was exploring this website which gives, possible direction towards God. http://www.aypsite.org/ – there are some advanced Yogis who can give some answers to you, if you post your question’s in there forum.
Regarding Dana, if done in right spirit without expectations purifies mind and body, and you naturally have satisfaction of helping somebody.
In beginning there may be expectations from Dana, but more spritual you are the expecations are gone. This depends from person to person irrespective of any religion.
I really dont understand what is bothering you.. So if your Soul is God , every Soul is God, where is the problem?
September 20, 2009 at 9:17 pm
Dear Shashikiran,
Thank you for well written comment. Also thank you for mentioning about http://www.aypsite.org/ – a very good website I discovered.
About the point “God does not come in problems”, I think I should tell you a story told by Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. Once upon a time, when a set of three people were walking through woods, they were confronted by a tiger. Person 1 says “Oh! There’s a hungry beast. We’re doomed. There’s no hope”. Person 2 says “No, God will help us out, come on let us pray God”, Person 3 says – “No, why should we disturb god about our problem, come on let’s climb this tree”.
The first person, didn’t believe in god. The second person believed in god. The third ? He LOVED god. He didn’t want to disturb his beloved with his little problems. Love of god stands only on love, not on anything else. Just love God. Period.
Amazing story, which makes my hair stand on it’s end. It is what we should all aim for. That is love. That is religion. That is God. Everything else is trade.
September 20, 2009 at 1:01 pm
you are right sudhanva..
. As long as we are in the time-space dimension, we cannot but think of becoming better instruments of the NATURE to ensure that the little we are destined to do is done well, in the deepest surrender and love!
• In this short span of life the little we do without the selfish tags attached to our work lifts us to a higher dimension, where love and compassion rule. We may glimpse that dimension of the Spirit beyond the material cluster of limited intellect and mind. The doors to freedom from the bondage of our self-created mind are compassion and love for others.
• I am happy in this journey of my life helping the less privileged help themselves and feel the blessings of my life a little more fully. You are with me and that is the universe helping itself.
• Yes, I am ever available to you through my prayers, love and sharing of the joy or sorrows
Flow with the happenings around you. Look with an open heart for. The joy of letting go (of) everything that the mind creates is the sweetest thing that the seeker can do. For that is the way by which the ultimate glimpse of the infinite light and grace comes. “the deepest longing of the heart for the Divine is itself the path.” So keep the fire of love and devotion aflame. The only reality is your love for HER and HER love for you.
• Your love for me is your love for the Nature(DIVINE) It is only when we offer our love to the Divine that there is true peace and happiness in our minds. This is true because the Divine is the only source of all love. When we offer (our love) to the Divine, that is, once we connect to the source, we receive that pure radiance which calms our being from within. You are feeling the sense of being calmed from within – this is the Divine Grace. The more you keep your senses open to see the unseen hands of the Divine Grace, the more you move into the recess(es) of your own heart
• I am so happy that am practicing the simple disciplines of surrender and acceptance in the day to day happenings in your life. That’s all. I don’t think anything more is expected. Just be in the awareness that SHE is taking care of you and all that is happening is HER will translating Itself.
• Move in … life with this awareness and grow out of all that is of secondary value. You are born to be that innocent child once again which you lost, but this time with a difference. The difference is you will have to have the innocence of the child(hood) but the AWARENESS OF
• (There is) no need of big philosophies and complicated theories – just have a simple heart which can dance with the music…love the sound and feel the vibration of the divine in everything that surrounds us. Simple, simple, simple…all is divine.
September 20, 2009 at 3:16 pm
Dear Satish,
You seem to hate big philosophies, but your reply itself is big and complicated! Sure one’s path is the simplest for him/her and you’re not the first one to think so
But hey, I did read through the whole thing and it made me happy – All little streams, no matter how big they are, how fast or slow they move, ultimately reach the sea, so no matter everyone whether he’s a brute or a saint, reaches God. I’d like to tell one thing, God “is not” nature in a gross sense, but “yes” in a subtle sense. But this is too much philosophy!
Once you’ve found bliss, you realise there are no such things as big philosophies and complicated theories, because all that there is, is GOD!
